Arriving without losing the day

Coastal road winding toward an Amalfi village
Allow extra time for the final coastal road, especially in summer.

The final approach to Amalfi is beautiful and demanding: roads narrow, traffic slows and luggage often needs to move the last few metres on foot. A little planning makes the arrival feel like part of the holiday rather than an obstacle. Amalfi Azure Retreat is on Via Marina Grande, a short uphill walk from the waterfront, with porter assistance available from the drop-off point.

From Naples

A private car from Naples International Airport usually takes 90–120 minutes in light traffic and considerably longer on summer Saturdays. The hotel can arrange a sedan, an executive van or a larger vehicle for families with luggage. Indicative one-way pricing begins around €150 for a sedan and €210 for a van. A driver meets guests at arrivals, monitors flight delays and brings luggage directly to reception.

Public transport is less expensive but involves changes. The airport shuttle to Naples Central Station, high-speed train to Salerno, then seasonal ferry or bus to Amalfi can take three to five hours. The ferry is scenic and avoids road traffic, but it is weather-dependent and does not operate on every winter date. Guests arriving after dark generally find a private transfer more comfortable.

Luggage and check-in

Send large cases ahead only through a trackable carrier and confirm acceptance with the hotel. At the property, porters can collect bags from the vehicle and deliver them to the room. Check-in begins at 15:00; early arrivals may use the pool, spa changing rooms and luggage room when the suite is not ready. Check-out is at 11:00. A late departure can sometimes be arranged for €80–€150, depending on availability.

First-day plan

Keep the first afternoon deliberately light. After a 15:00 check-in, settle on the terrace, swim before the evening breeze and reserve dinner at Riva Alta. If you arrive before lunch, ask the concierge for a short harbour walk rather than committing to a distant excursion. Boat trips, Pompeii and Ravello are best planned after a night’s rest.

Tell the hotel your arrival mode, approximate time, mobility needs and number of bags. Comfortable shoes matter: the coast involves steps, cobbles and slopes even when a destination looks close on a map. The best arrival is not necessarily the fastest; it is the one that leaves enough energy to notice where you are.
