Rooftop dining above the coast

Reserve a west-facing table when the sunset is part of the occasion.

Riva Alta is Amalfi Azure Retreat’s rooftop restaurant, set above the main building with views toward the curve of the coast. It operates for breakfast from 07:30 to 10:30, lunch from 12:30 to 14:30 and dinner from 19:00 to 22:30. The kitchen is contemporary Campanian: local tomatoes, Amalfi lemon, anchovies, handmade pasta and daily fish are used without turning the menu into a formal tasting exercise.

What to order

Breakfast is included for hotel guests and combines a buffet of fruit, yoghurt, pastries and breads with cooked-to-order eggs. The lemon ricotta pancakes are popular, but an early continental plate is faster before a boat excursion. Lunch is intentionally lighter: expect grilled vegetables, tuna or citrus salads, pizza-like flatbreads and chilled pasta. Dinner offers three courses à la carte, with a five-course chef’s menu available on selected evenings.

A typical dinner costs €70–€110 per person before wine. Starters average €18, pasta €24–€32 and main courses €32–€48. The chef’s menu is approximately €95, with a paired wine option around €55. Children can order smaller portions, and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-aware choices are available when noted at booking. The kitchen needs advance notice for severe allergies.

Reservations and seating

Hotel guests may request dinner at reception or through the concierge. A reservation is strongly recommended for sunset, especially in July and August. The west terrace is the most atmospheric but can be breezy; the covered pergola is more comfortable in spring and late autumn. Indoor tables retain the view through full-height glazing and are preferable during strong wind. Dinner dress is polished casual: linen, trousers, skirts and smart sandals are suitable.

Timing tip: Sunset seating is not the same as sunset dining. In midsummer, book 20:00; in October, 19:00 may capture the final light.

Strengths and limitations

The restaurant’s strengths are its setting, local produce and relaxed pacing. It is particularly good for a first-night dinner because guests do not need another transfer after travel. The trade-off is that the menu is premium and the rooftop is exposed to weather. Nearby Amalfi restaurants offer more variety and sometimes lower prices, but require stairs, taxis or a water transfer. For a special evening, reserve the chef’s menu and tell the team whether the view, dietary needs or a celebration is the priority.
